GENERALS SPLIT WITH RANDOLPH MACON

LEXINGTON, VA. Leftfielder James Madden's walk-off homerun in the bottom of the seventh capped off a come from behind 2 run rally, following first baseman Taylor McConnell's solo homerun to lift the Generals to an 8-7 first game win over Randolph Macon Sunday. The Generals came back from 2-0, 6-2, and 7-6 deficits to record the win. Second baseman David Miller was 2-4 with 2 doubles, shortstop Scott Gosselink and rightfielder Terrence McKelvey were 2-3 to lead the Generals at the plate. Clayton Edwards started and went 3 innings for W&L, and reliever Sophomore Jeff Pharis got the win.

  In the second game, 6 errors by the Generals, 3 by Miller, and Taylor McConnell's base running gaff, trying to stretch a lead-off double into a triple in the seventh, allowed the Yellow Jackets to escape with a 7-6 win in the second game of the doubleheader, and spoiled centerfielder David Mackenzie's clutch homerun to tie the game at 3. The loss cost the Generals a fourth place seed in the ODAC Tournament, which starts Thursday at Lynchburg. Instead, the Generals will be seeded last, and will face regular season champ, Bridgewater, in the first game in the double elimination tournament. Mackenzie's homerun came after being hit by a pitch, but he was denied first base when the umpire ruled he did not try to get out of the way of the pitch. Mackenzie was also 2-3 with a double. Third baseman Clayton Edwards and designated hitter Richard Garland were 2-4 at the plate. Miller, Edwards, McConnell and McKelvey also doubled for W&L. John Parker started for the Generals, yielding 3 runs over 5 innings. Sophomore Tim Livingston relieved Parker, but all runs scored against him were unearned. Livingston was relieved by Freshman Brendan Clark, Pharis, Freshman Andrew Henderson, who took the loss, and Sophomore Steve Marcott.

GENERALS FALL TO WEST VIRGINIA TECH, 12-0

 LEXINGTON, VA--West Virginia Tech's Golden Bears scored 3 runs in the second inning, four in the third, 2 in the fourth, 1 in the fifth and 2 in the eighth inning in shutting out W&L Tuesday at Smith Field. For the Generals, sophomore James Madden was 2-4, designated hitter Jordan Wesley doubled, and junior second baseman David Miller and third baseman Clayton Edwards added base hits, as the Generals were limited to 5 hits on the day before only 80 fans. Sophomore John Parker (2-4)  yielded 7 runs (5 earned) on 9 hits in 3 innings to take the loss. Freshman Brendan Clark and Sophomore Jeff Pharis pitched shutout innings for W&L. The Generals play their final regular season ODAC doubleheader Sunday at home against Randolph Macon, beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Parker throws 3 hitter, McKelvey 3-5, 2RBI, 4 Generals with 2 hits
GENERALS COMPLETE SWEEP OF ROANOKE, 9-1

 SALEM, VA--Sophomore John Parker hurled 5 innings of 3 hit ball to win his second game of the year, and Freshman right fielder Terrence McKelvey was 3-5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored to lead W&L's offense to defeat the Roanoke College Maroons 9-1 in a night ODAC contest in Salem, Tuesday. Senior shortstop Scott Gosselink, Junior second baseman David Miller, designated hitter Richard Garland, and Senior first baseman Taylor McConnell, who also doubled, all had 2 hits for the Generals. Sophomore pitchers Jeff Pharis and Steve Marcott pitched 3 innings and 1 inning of shutout ball to seal the victory.

After the Maroons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, W&L scored 5 runs in the 4th inning as Garland singled home McConnell, who doubled, McKelvey singled in Garland, Miller's 2 RBI singled scored Garland and McKelvey, and Gosselink's single scored centerfielder David Mackenzie, who reached base on an error. In the fifth inning, left fielder James Madden singled and scored on a passed ball after advancing on a single by catcher Jordan Wesley, and a fielder's choice by third baseman Clayton Edwards.

   The Generals' final 3 runs came in the seventh, as McKelvey singled in Madden, who walked, and advanced on a walk issued to Wesley, who also scored on a Maroon throwing error, and McKelvey scored on an RBI single by Mackenzie.

GENERALS IN ODAC TOURNAMENT

LYNCHBURG, VA-- The sixth-seeded Washington and Lee baseball team will play top-seeded Bridgewater in the first round of the ODAC Tournament on Thursday at 11:00 am at Lynchburg City Stadium in Lynchburg, Va.

   If W&L defeats the Eagles, it will play the loser of the game between third-seeded Virginia Wesleyan and fourth-seeded Randolph-Macon on Friday at 3:00 pm.

   If the Generals lose to Bridgewater, they will play the loser of the game between second-seeded Hampden-Sydney and fifth-seeded Guilford on Friday at 11:00 am. Games will not be posted until the webmaster returns from a business trip on the weekend.

Gosselink, Madden, Edwards hit homeruns

GENERALS FALL TO HAMPDEN-SYDNEY 8-9, 5-12

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA.--W&L dropped an ODAC doubleheader to Hampden-Sydney Saturday by scores of 8-9 and 5-12, jeopardizing post season play hopes. In the first game leftfielder James Madden, who hit a homerun and had 2 BI, and rightfielder Terrence McKelvey each hit 3-5. Shortstop Scott Gosselink was 2-5 with a homerun 2RBI and 3 runs scored in the first game. Junior Clayton Edwards pitched 6.2 innings of 13 hit 8 run (5 earned) ball, relieved by Sophomore Jeff Pharis, who pitched 3.1 innings, allowing only one run, but suffering the tough loss in game one, won by the Tigers, 9-8. Catcher Jordan Wesley, first baseman Taylor McConnell and centerfielder David Mackenzie all had hits for the Generals in the first game in which W&L scored 2 runs in the first inning on a triple by Gosselink, scoring second baseman David Miller, who walked, and Gosselink scored on a sacrifice fly by McConnell. W&L took a 3-0 lead in the 3rd inning on Gooselink's homerun, but Hampden-Sydney scored runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings to tie the score at 4, and took a 5-4 lead on a run in the 4th.

  The Generals jumped out to a 7-5 lead in the 5th as McConnell doubled in Gosselink, who reached base on an error, Madden singled in McConnell, and Madden scored on McKelvey's single, after Wesley's single advanced Madden to second base. After the Tigers scored twice in the 6th, W&L scored a run on Madden's homerun to take an 8-6 lead in the 7th. Hampden-Sydney answered with a run in the bottom of the 7th to tie the game at 8.The Tigers scored the winning run in the 10th inning on 3 singles

  In game 2, the Generals scored in the first inning again as Madden doubled in Gosselink, who walked. The Tigers scored a run to tie in the bottom half of the inning, and scored 3 runs in the 3rd inning to take a 4-1 lead. W&L scored a run in the 4th as Mackenzie, who was hit by a pitch, scored on an error on a ball hit by Gosselink. The Tigers answered with a run in the 4th, and scored 4 runs in the 5th, which was all they need for the win.W&L scored in the 6th on a solo homerun by Edwards, and 2 in the 7th, as designated hitter, Richard Garland, who was hit by a pitch, scored on a ground out, RBI by Edwards, and McKelvey doubled in  Madden, who walked. The Tigers scored 3 more runs in the 7th. Johnson Brownlow gave up 9 runs (5 earned) in 4.2 innings to take the loss. Tim Livingston gave up 3 runs  (1 earned) in 2 innings, and Brendan Clark shut out the Tigers in 1.1 innings to close the game for the Generals.W&L takes on Division II West Virginia Tech at Cap'n Dick Smith field Tuesday at 3:00.
