Maranatha comes back and defeats Northland
Maranatha 2, Northland 1
September 8, 2008
Be a duck. That's what Coach Pill told his players before the game against Northland Baptist Bible College. "I wanted them to be like a duck and let the moments of the game roll right off their backs," Coach Pill said. "They needed to keep their composure."
The Crusaders (4-2) needed composure throughout the first half as the Pioneers dominated play. The Crusaders were barely keeping their heads above water with Northland outshooting them 16-3 in the first half.
The offensive pressure payed off for Northland with the first goal of the game during the 13th minute. Even though Northland continued to barrage the Crusader goal with shots, the ball would not go in. The Pioneers had multiple shots hit the cross-bar.
With about ten minutes left in the first half, Coach Pill made a defensive adjustment, and the Crusaders played much better to finish the half only down 1-0.
The second half was a different story. The Crusaders turned momentum on their side and outshot the Pioneers 9-6. In the 69th minute Andrew Solarek headed in a throw-in from Jarid Lawson to even the score at 1-1.
Five minutes later, Brett Hollenbeck scored on a free kick over the wall and in the right corner of the goal.
The Crusaders held off the offensive pressure by the Pioneers for the rest of the second half for their first victory against Northland since 2001.
The Crusaders look ahead to their second Northern Athletics Conference game against Rockford College on Friday, September 12.
Maranatha sports teams combine for 10-0 record on first weekend
Crusader fans couldn’t have asked for a much better start to the fall sports season. Maranatha’s four teams combined for a 10-0 record over the first weekend.
The volleyball team won all six of its matches at the Great Lakes Christian College Tournament in Michigan. The men’s soccer team won games on Friday and Saturday, giving new head coach Jeff Pill a 2-0 debut. The women’s soccer team picked up the first victory of the weekend, defeating Philadelphia Biblical, 4-1, at home on Friday. The football team overpowered the alumni, 33-8, in a scrimmage that preceded this Saturday’s regular-season and home opener at noon against Martin Luther College.
Maranatha’s volleyball team won 17 of 18 games while defeating Ohio Christian (3-0), Great Lakes Christian (3-0), Indiana University-Northwest (3-1), Dayspring (3-0), Grace Bible (3-0) and, in the championship match, Great Lakes Christian 25-14, 25-14.
“We played very well, and we identified the weaknesses we’ll need to work on to get ready for conference play,” head coach Regina DeLozier said. “I have six seniors. At one point, I had all six out on the floor at the same time. I thought to myself how nice it is to have that experience out there.”
Senior setter Jessica Biechy was named to the all-tournament team. DeLozier said Biechy played particularly well, as did senior outside hitter Deb Giegerich and sophomore middle blocker Keelin Nissley, who joined the team this year for the first time.
“Our defense started off shaky,” DeLozier said. “By the end, we were getting beautiful passes from the setters.”
The men’s soccer team defeated Great Lakes Christian, 4-1, and Grace Bible College, 5-0. The Crusaders were able to take only 13 players on the trip due to freshman orientation and leadership responsibilities for some upperclassmen.
Senior midfielder Melissa Nichols scored two goals for the women against Philadelphia Biblical. Elise Jones and Julie Muse also scored first-half goals for Maranatha.
Junior running back Mike Crawford and junior wide receiver Ron Dupre were among the football players who starred against the alumni. The varsity led, 26-0, at halftime.
