Free agents CC Sabathia, Ben Sheets and Brian Shouse were offered salary arbitration Monday by the Brewers, ensuring Milwaukee will receive compensatory picks in next year's amateur draft if they sign elsewhere. Brewers general manager Doug Melvin had plans to spend the long Thanksgiving weekend in Chicago with his family.
He didn't expect to conduct much business, if any.
All was quiet on the CC Sabathia front as the holiday rolled around. Melvin spoke briefly on the telephone with Greg Genske, the lead agent for Sabathia, but little information was exchanged.
"I just wanted to touch base," Melvin said.
Melvin still wasn't sure if any team other than the Brewers and Yankees had made concrete offers to Sabathia, who pitched Milwaukee to its first playoff berth in 26 years after coming from Cleveland in an early-July trade.
The Brewers started the bidding with a five-year offer for $100 million. ...More |
